Cultivated in East Asia, osmanthus is a small evergreen shrub or small tree. It is a part of the same botanical family as jasmine and lilac. The recognisable aroma is complex, rich, sweet and is often used in fine perfumes and fragrance products. Labour-intensive and expensive to produce, osmanthus is an absolute extracted from the flower of the plant as the blossoms are too delicate for steam distilling the essential oil.
